What are some of the different types of headaches and how are they diagnosed?
Common headaches include:
-Cervicogenic headaches
-Migraines
-Tension-type headaches
A chiropractor can diagnose these common headaches with a thorough verbal and physical examination. Further testing is often not necessary for diagnosis and treatment planning.
How are migraines different from cervicogenic headaches?
-Intense and one-sided
-Can last hours to days
-Are accompanied by nausea or light and/or sound sensitivity
-Can involve a visual or auditory aura
Cervicogenic headaches often:
-Involve tension in the neck
-Typically last minutes to hours
-Don’t involve nausea
What are some effective treatments for headaches and migraines?
Hands-on mobilization, manipulation, and soft tissue therapy of the neck and mid-back are recommended treatments for headaches when deemed safe. Assessment and treatment of the TMJ can be helpful. Education (on the condition and its management, prevention strategies, stress/sleep management, dietary planning) and active rehabilitation are also recommended treatments often part of a successful comprehensive care plan.
